Find that your AirPods Pro Ear Tip Fit test does not work?
Then this guide is written specifically to address that.
The Ear Tip Fit test is a way to make sure that your AirPods Pro fits perfectly in your ears in order to provide the best sound quality and noise cancellation. The issue, however, as reported by many AirPods Pro users, is that this test either keeps failing or doesn’t work.
We have tried and tested the solutions below, and we hope that the solutions below do help or at least set you on the right path to resolving the issue.
Let’s dive right in.

How to Fix AirPods Pro Ear Tip Fit Test Not Working: 3 Ways
1. Try Rearranging, Twisting Till It Works.
The first tip, which you may or may not have already done, is to adjust the position of the AirPods Pro in your ears until it better fits.
Apple also suggests trying out the different ear tips provided for the AirPods Pro and then carrying out the Ear Tip Fit test until it passes. The key here is to choose the ear tip that’s most comfortable for you as well as an excellent seal to allow for noise cancellation.
If you think that this is just one of Apple’s stupid exclusive requirements, it’s frankly not as both Sony and Bose advise to do the same for their noise-cancellation headphones/earphones:
- Bose: Getting the proper fit for Bose QuietComfort20
- Sony: Noise-cancelling doesn’t work on my WF-1000XM3 earbud headphones
It’s crucial if you want the best noise cancellation, then the seal has to adequately fit – which is why the Ear Tip Fit test is helpful.
You may find that you may need different sizes for your left and right ears, and that’s completely fine. Again, if it is comfortable and it works to cancel out noise, then it should work to pass the test.
If you’re having to find yourself adjusting the angles of the AirPods Pro or twisting it upside-down, then the issue is with the ear caps, in which case you may need to purchase more suitable ear tips sizes. This varies from person-to-person since each of us has different ear sizes.
Help! How do you remove and attach ear tips on AirPods Pro?
Pull firmly using your fingers at the base of ear tip – where the ear tip is attached to your AirPod Pro. This will remove the ear tip.
If you would like to attach the same (or different) ear tip, align the ear tip with the oval-shaped connector on the AirPod Pro. Next, holding the base of the ear tip, push the ear tip into the connector until you hear a ‘Click’ into place.
2. Hitting Play Twice.
Credit goes to user GellieG for pointing this out over on the Apple forums. The solution works during the Ear Tip Fit test, where instead of just hitting the Play button, you will need to scroll up the page where there you will find another Play button to press.
Any reason why there are two Play buttons? We are not sure why 🤷♂️ , but Apple, for some reason, did add it.
Here are the steps to follow:
- With your AirPods Pro in your ears, jump into your Settings app and then tap on Bluetooth.
- Next, tap on the blue info button (i) next to your AirPods Pro in the list of Bluetooth devices.
- Now, tap on the Ear Tip Fit test. Make sure that you have iOS (or iPadOS) version 13.2 or later to see the Ear Tip Fit test.
- Next, tap Continue and then tap the first Play button.
- Now on the next page, you will need to scroll up the page (if you’re on iPhone XS Max or iPhone 11 Pro Max), and you should see another Play button.
That’s pretty much it! The test will start working.
3. Visit Apple.
Besides the two solutions above, the one surefire way to fix this issue is to visit Apple and tell them about the problem. Many users had this similar issue and got it fixed as Apple’s Support exchanged for a new pair of AirPods Pro.
The most likely cause is that the ones you’ve received are defective, and considering since this is the first generation of the AirPods Pro to be released, issues like these are generally expected along with the other myriad of problems which we’ve previously talked about. You can also request for a refund, as long as you’re within 14 days.
For more information on returns and refunds, as well as if you wish to prefer returning the product via a carrier, then Apple has written a helpful page on this.
