Fix: Can’t Download Updates on Microsoft Teams

Wondering why you can’t download updates on Microsoft Teams?

As companies adapt to hybrid setups, the demand for social networking platforms like Microsoft Teams and Slack also increases. In the span of five years, Microsoft Teams gain over 200 million users, which is currently the company’s fastest-growing platform.

Unfortunately, despite its user base and status, Microsoft Teams is not safe from issues and other errors.

If you are here, we can assume that you can’t download updates on Microsoft Teams.

Most of the time, slow network connections and server-related issues are the cause of download problems on Microsoft Teams. However, it can also be due to a lack of storage, improper configurations, and third-party apps.

To help you out, we’ve decided to make a guide on what to do if you can’t download updates on Microsoft Teams.

Let’s jump right in!

1. Check Microsoft Teams Servers.

Whenever you encounter issues with Microsoft Teams, the first thing you should do is check the status of the servers. This way, you can identify whether the problem is coming from their end or your device.

To do this, you can visit Microsoft’s dedicated status page and see if there are reported outages with Microsoft Teams.

Server Status

Unfortunately, server-related issues can’t be resolved on your end. If the servers are down, the best thing you can do is wait for the devs to fix the issue. On the other hand, you can head to the next solution if there’s nothing wrong with the servers.

2. Restart Your Device.

Before tweaking your configurations, we suggest restarting your device if you can’t download updates on Microsoft Teams. This should reload your resources and eliminate temporary errors that occurred during use.

See the steps below to restart your PC:

  1. Access the Start Menu by clicking on the Windows icon on the Taskbar
  2. Next, click on the Power Options tab.
  3. Finally, choose Restart and wait for your system to reboot.

Once done, go back to Microsoft Teams and try downloading updates again.

3. Check Your Network Connection.

Slow or unstable internet could also be the reason you can’t download updates on Microsoft Teams. Since you are using an online service, you’ll need a decent connection to enjoy the platform’s features.

To check if your network is the problem, perform a test using Fast.com to measure its upload and download bandwidth.

If you’ve confirmed that your connection is the culprit, power cycle your modem or router to re-establish the link with your ISP’s servers. Unplug your router from the outlet and wait for 5 to 10 seconds before reconnecting it.

Once done, re-run the test on your network to check if the problem is solved. If your internet continues to run slow, contact your provider and ask them to fix their service.

4. Check If You Have Storage Left.

Another reason why you can’t download updates on Microsoft Teams is that you do not have enough storage left. While Microsoft Teams doesn’t consume a lot of space, apps and files on your system could be filling up your storage and there’s no room to install the update.

If this is the case, try to identify files and applications you no longer use and remove them from your computer.

5. Launch Microsoft Teams As Admin.

You can also try launching Microsoft Teams as an administrator if you are having issues downloading updates. The app might not have permission to change certain resources on your system, explaining why you can’t download the update.

To fix this, see the steps below to run Microsoft Teams as admin:

  1. On your desktop, find Microsoft Teams and right-click on it.
  2. Now, choose Properties and go to the Compatibility tab.
  3. Finally, enable the ‘Run this Program as an Administrator’ option.

Relaunch Microsoft Teams afterward and try updating the app again.

6. Disable Antivirus.

Antivirus software are third-party applications that protect your system and files from viruses and malware. However, some services can get too protective and block even legitimate applications from accessing your system.

To avoid issues, try turning off your antivirus protection while updating Microsoft Teams. You can also try adding Microsoft Teams to the exception list if your antivirus supports the feature.

7. Reinstall Microsoft Teams.

If none of the solutions above work, the last thing you can do is reinstall Microsoft Teams on your computer. This way, you can ensure that you have the latest version of the software and there are no missing or broken resources.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. On your computer, go to the Control Panel and click on Uninstall a Program
  2. Now, locate Microsoft Teams from the list of applications.
  3. Finally, right-click on the app and choose Uninstall

Go to Microsoft’s website afterward and download the latest version of Microsoft Teams.
