How to Fix Can’t Import on Adobe Premiere Pro

Wondering why you can’t import on Adobe Premiere Pro?

Adobe Premiere Pro is the leading timeline-based video editing tool in the world. Adobe Inc. developed Premiere Pro for Windows and macOS computers and has been around since September 2003.

Almost two decades later, Adobe Premiere Pro has cemented itself at the top of video editing software for both creative and professional use.

Despite its status, this doesn’t mean that Adobe Premiere Pro is flawless.

While the app offers some of the best features for video editing, it comes with its own issues and errors.

One problem you might face on Adobe Premiere Pro is the import error. This issue occurs while adding resources to your projects. When you try importing a video or audio, you’ll encounter a ‘file import failure’ message.

Unfortunately, there’s no specific reason why this problem occurs. It can be due to corrupted data, improper user settings, or outdated software versions.

In this guide, we’ll show you what to do if you can’t import files on Adobe Premiere Pro.

Let’s get started!

1. Restart Your Computer.

Before changing your settings, we suggest restarting your system first if you can’t import files on Adobe Premiere Pro. A temporary bug or glitch may have occurred on your computer, which triggers the error on the app.

For Windows users, here’s how you can restart your computer:

  1. On your keyboard, hit the Windows key to open the Start Menu
  2. Next, access the Power Options tab.
  3. Finally, click on Restart to reboot your computer.

  3. Lastly, click on Restart again to confirm your action.

Once done, go back to Adobe Premiere Pro and try importing your files.

2. Check If Your File Is Supported.

Although Adobe Premiere Pro has support for multiple file types, there are some audio and video formats that are not compatible with the software. If you can’t import your projects on Adobe Premiere Pro, it might indicate that your files are not supported.

For more information, you can visit Adobe’s official site to learn more about the supported file types of Premiere Pro.

If you can’t see the format of your video or audio from the list, convert it first using a conversion tool before importing it to your project.

3. Clear Your Media Cache.

Your project could be using a lot of system resources, and your computer can’t handle more load. If this is the case, we suggest clearing your media cache to free up some space on your system.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Launch Adobe Premiere Pro on your computer.
  2. Next, click on File > Preferences
  3. Go to the Media Cache tab afterward and look for Media Cache Files
  4. Finally, hit the Delete button to clear your media cache.

Try importing your files to your project afterward and check if the problem is solved.

4. Try Renaming the File.

For unknown reasons, some users were able to fix this issue after renaming the file on their computers. If you still can’t import your files on your project, you can try renaming and relocating them to another folder before importing.

Simply go to the folder where your file is located, rename your audios and videos, and move it to another location.

Go back to Adobe Premiere Pro afterward and check if the problem is solved.

5. Reinstall Adobe Premiere Pro.

At this point, the last thing you can do is reinstall Adobe Premiere Pro on your computer. If you can’t import any file on any project, we strongly recommend reinstalling the software on your system.

For Windows, see the steps below to delete Adobe Premiere Pro:

  1. Access the Control Panel on your computer.
  2. Next, click on Uninstall a Program and locate Adobe Premiere Pro
  3. Finally, right-click on the app and choose Uninstall
