How to Change Your Background in Zoom: 5 Ways

1. First Things First, Let’s Enable Virtual Backgrounds for Zoom.

First and foremost, we will first want to make sure that the setting for using virtual backgrounds is enabled.

Without doing this step, you will not see the option to change the background in Zoom. Several users have reported that they’re unable to add virtual backgrounds on either desktop or their mobile phones because of not enabling virtual backgrounds with the below steps.

Here’s how you enable virtual backgrounds on Zoom:

  1. Using your desktop web browser, you will need to head over to zoom.us/signin and sign in to your Zoom account.

  1. Once you’ve signed in, from the left sidebar under Personal, you will need to select the Settings tab.

Zoom Settings on Web

  1. Now in the Meeting settings, from the left sidebar again choose In Meeting (Advanced).
  2. Lastly, scroll down a little, and you should see an option that says Virtual background. Make sure that the option is switched on (as shown below).

That’s pretty much it! With virtual backgrounds now enabled, you can now go ahead and change your background in Zoom on your desktop and/or mobile devices using the next few methods. 🙂

2. Change Zoom Background On Mac (macOS) and Windows 10.

To change your Zoom background on your Mac or your Windows 10 PC, you need to follow with the below steps.

Additionally, we will show you how you can add your own custom downloaded virtual backgrounds for Zoom too! 😀

Here’s how you enable virtual backgrounds on Mac and Windows:

  1. Go ahead open the Zoom app that you’ve downloaded on your Mac or Windows PC and from the home page click on the little settings gear icon located in the top right corner (just under your profile icon).

  1. Your camera will get activated, and you can choose from the multiple virtual background options that are provided by default. Since this is your first time enabling virtual backgrounds for Zoom, take note that you will see a message that says Download Smart Visual package when you click on any one of the default virtual backgrounds. You will need to hit Download to have the virtual backgrounds get downloaded first before you can use them.

Note

Take note of your machine’s requirements to use virtual backgrounds without a green screen. You will need to have a 4th generation i7 quad-core or higher processor or a 6th generation i5 dual-core or higher processor to use this feature. You can see more requirements for all the platforms listed in Zoom’s ‘Prerequisites’ section.

  1. Once you’ve downloaded them, you can simply select the background that you want. The virtual background will now be used as the default for every Zoom meeting now onwards. If you change your mind, you can simply click on the None option which will remove the background.

Tip: If you’re already in a meeting, you can change and add a virtual background by merely clicking on the up arrow (^) next to “Start/Stop Video” and then selecting “Choose Virtual Background.” You’ll see the “Virtual Backgrounds” box show up just as shown in the previous steps.

Tip: To get the best results when using virtual backgrounds for Zoom, you will want to use or purchase a physical green screen (if you don’t already have one) and have it installed. If you do obtain a green screen, you can check the box next to I have a green screen option on the same page. Subsequently, choose the colour of your green screen, which will be replaced with the virtual background.
