How to Fix Discord Stuck on Checking for Updates

Is Discord stuck on checking for updates?

Discord is a Voice over Internet Protocol service and communication platform widely used by gamers worldwide. Aside from text messaging, you can also join voice and video chats on Discord.

It also offers a host of great features well-suited for gaming like custom servers, dedicated channels, and minimal system usage.

Unfortunately, Discord also has its fair share of issues.

One of the most common problems on Discord is that it gets stuck on checking for updates. The Discord app automatically updates every time you start it, making it impossible to get past the update page.

However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything.

Today, we’ll show you what to do if Discord gets stuck on checking for updates.

Let’s get started!

1. Check Discord Servers.

One of the most common reasons Discord is stuck on the update screen is if the servers are down. Discord’s team could be performing system maintenance, or unexpected issues occurred on the servers.

You can visit Discord’s status page to confirm this.

If the servers are down, the only thing you can do for now is wait for Discord’s team to resolve the problem.

On the other hand, you can head to the next solution below if the servers are fine.

2. Restart Your System.

Your system may have run into temporary errors, which causes connection issues. This explains why the app gets stuck on the checking for updates page. To fix this, restart your computer to reload your system resources and eliminate temporary bugs and glitches.

Here’s how you can restart your Windows PC:

  1. First, open the Start Menu on your Taskbar
  2. Next, access the Power Options tab.
  3. Lastly, choose Restart

Once done, go back to Discord to check if the problem is solved.

3. Check Your Network Connection.

A slow network connection is the most common reason for this issue on Discord. If the Discord app is stuck on the update screen, it may indicate a problem with your network. Run a test using Fast.com to confirm this.

Speed Test

If there’s an issue with your network, unplug your router from the outlet and wait for at least five seconds before plugging it back in. This should power cycle your router and refresh the connection with your ISP.

Restart Router

Once done, re-run the test to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your ISP and ask them to fix the issue.

4. Disable Your VPN.

VPNs are third-party tools that protect your network and online data. They work by changing your default IP address to hide your location and filtering your activity to secure sensitive information like bank accounts and credit card numbers.

However, some VPNs don’t work efficiently and could affect the performance of your network. If you can’t update the Discord app, turn off your VPN first.

PureVPN

On the other hand, consider switching to PureVPN if you don’t want to go online without protection. Unlike other services, PureVPN works well with most applications and doesn’t interfere with your connection.

5. Flush Your DNS Cache.

Your DNS cache may have accumulated over time and become corrupted. When this happens, apps on your system could struggle to connect to the internet. Flush your DNS if Discord keeps getting stuck on the checking for updates page.

Follow the guide below to flush your DNS:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows + X keys to open the Quick Menu
  2. After that, click on Command Prompt (Admin)
  3. Finally, type ‘ipconfig /flushdns’ and hit the Enter key to run the command.

Once done, restart your computer and see if the update will push through.

6. Allow Discord on Your Firewall.

Windows Firewall is a security feature on Windows that controls the access of applications to the internet. If you encounter update issues on Discord, check if the app is allowed through your firewall.

Here’s how you can check your firewall settings:

  1. First, open the Start Menu and search for ‘Windows Defender Firewall’.
  2. After that, open it and click on ‘Add an App or Feature Through Windows Defender Firewall’.
  3. Lastly, find Discord and ensure that it can access your Public and Private networks.
