Recently several users reported that their screens are displaying error 0x81000036 when they attempt to restore Windows to a previous working version. This error can occur due to a number of reasons, including a conflict with Windows Sandbox and Hyper-V.

1. Disable Windows Sandbox.

The Sandbox is a lightweight environment that is around 100 MB in size where you can run unauthorized software without affecting your system. 

There are times when the Windows Sandbox functionality conflicts with the Windows Restore feature, resulting in errors like the error code 0x81000036. 

Several users managed to fix the issue at hand by temporarily disabling Windows Sandbox, which is why we encourage you to give it a shot. 

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Press Windows + R keys simultaneously to open a Run dialogue box. 
  2. In the text field of the dialogue box, type ‘appwiz.cpl’ and press Enter. This will launch the Programs and Features window.

  1. In the next window, locate Windows Sandbox and uncheck the box against it. 
  1. Click Yes in the User Account Prompt (UAC) to proceed. 

If the issue was caused by Windows Sandbox, disabling it temporarily will resolve the issue. If you face the error 0x81000036 when using Windows Backup again, proceed to the next method below. 

2. Disable Hyper-V.

Another common reason behind the Troubleshoot error 0x81000036 when using Windows Backup is the conflict between Hyper-V and Windows Restore feature.

Hyper-V lets the users share hardware resources across virtual machines. Advanced users use it to create one or multiple virtual machines if they want to install and run different operating systems on a single Windows 10 PC. 

However, just like the Sandbox, it can sometimes conflict with Windows processes and cause issues. 

If Method 1 did not work for you, here is how you can disable Hyper-V to fix the error code 0x81000036:

  1. Press Windows + R keys simultaneously to open a Run dialogue box. 
  2. In the text field of the dialogue box, type ‘appwiz.cpl’ and press Enter. This will launch the Programs and Features window. 
  3. In the Programs and Features window, click on Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Now locate Hyper-V and uncheck the box associated with it. 
  1. Click on Yes in the User Account Prompt and check if the issue is resolved. 

In case Hyper-V was the culprit, disabling it will fix the issue under consideration. If you manage to resolve the issue, you can enable Hyper-V again by following the steps mentioned above.

4. Clean Install Windows. 

If none of the methods above works for you, then this means that the error under consideration cannot be resolved using the conventional troubleshooting methods. 

If this scenario is applicable, then we recommend clean installing Windows

Clean installing Windows will update to the latest version, and you’ll be able to start over without any corrupt files and errors like the one at hand.
