How to Fix Microsoft Teams Does Not Detect Camera

Find that whenever you try to open your camera in Microsoft Teams, it does not detect the camera and says “No Device Found”?

Or perhaps you find that the camera despite it working on your computer does not work when it comes to using with Microsoft Teams?

Whatever issue it is with Microsoft Teams, this guide is written for you. Microsoft Teams is a great tool which often is used for collaborative efforts in workspaces or even in educational classrooms where users can chat, send and share content, as well as have group video calls, conferences and much more.

However plenty of users have reported issues on the Microsoft forums like this, this and this (just a few of the many examples) where Microsoft Teams does not detect camera on Windows PC.

We have encountered the same issue as well as we tested Microsoft Teams and what follows in this guide is the tried-tested solutions which we have found most-effective. The solutions below are also a credit to all the contributors over on the forums as well as our readers who have kindly shared their solutions with us. 🙂

Without wasting another minute, let’s dive right in.

1. Allow Microsoft Teams to Access Your Camera.

The very first thing you should check is if provided the permission for Microsoft Teams to use your camera and microphone. Apps like Microsoft Teams or even Skype for that matter will not detect your camera if left disabled in your PC’s settings.

Here’s how you can check if you’ve given the permissions for Microsoft Teams to use your camera:

  1. Go ahead and press down on your Windows Key and I key together. This will bring up the Windows Settings page (as shown below).
  2. Next, click on Privacy.

Windows Settings

  1. Now, from the left sidebar, under App permissions click on Camera

  1. On the Camera page, what you want to do is make sure the option Allow apps to access your camera is turned On (as shown below).

  1. Additionally, you will also want to make sure that under Choose which apps can access your camera, that Microsoft Teams is turned On. Now Microsoft Teams will appear here in this list if you have the Microsoft Teams desktop app installed. If you are relying on the Microsoft Teams web app, then proceed to Method 2

Note

If you’re finding your microphone is not working too on Microsoft Teams, then from the left sidebar under App permissions, select Microphone. From there, repeat what you did for Steps 4 and 5 for the microphone as well.

Once again try testing to see if your camera works after enabling the access. If the permission options were already turned on initially, try turning them off, leave it for 5-10 seconds then turned them back on.

If you’re using the web version of Microsoft Teams, then read on as the next method will cover this.

2. Using Microsoft Teams on Your Web Browser? Then Do This.

If you’re using your web browser instead of using the Microsoft Teams Windows app, then you will need to make sure that the site has been given permission to use your camera.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Go to Microsoft Teams using your search browser (Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox).
  2. Depending on your search browser, proceed with its appropriate steps:

If you’re on Google Chrome

  1. You need to click on the lock icon in the search URL box (at the top) as shown below.

  1. Then click Site settings

Site settings Google Chrome

  1. You will be brought to your Google Chrome settings where under Permissions you will want to make sure that Camera is set to Allow rather than Block or Ask.

Ask is a secure option if you do not want your camera turned on without being prompted every time you access Microsoft Teams. Block prevents Microsoft Teams from accessing or even detecting your camera.

If you’re on Mozilla Firefox

You need to click on the Firefox menu button  Mozilla Firefox menu and select Options.

  1. Next, click Privacy & Security from the left menu.
  2. Then scroll down to the Permissions section and click the Settings… button for the Camera option.
  3. Now enter the website URL in the search field for the site that you want to access your camera. In our case, we will need to enter https://teams.microsoft.com/ to allow Microsoft Teams access to our camera. Hit the Enter key.

Firefox makes it a secure and straightforward way to handle the websites that you want to provide access and the ones to not. You can remove it at any time by selecting it from the list and clicking the Remove Website. Finally don’t forget to hit the Save changes button!

Try testing to see if your camera works after enabling the camera access for Microsoft Teams web app.

3. Update All of Your Drivers.

Several users have reported that updating their drivers with new ones helped with the issue and allow Microsoft Teams to detect the camera.

We will walk you through the steps:

  1. Using your Windows Search (bottom-left), search for Device Manager. Select the Device Manager option when it appears in the search results.
  2. Next, in Device Manager, under Cameras, right-click on your camera/webcam from the list and select Update driver.

  1. You may find a pop-up window will appear that asks whether to Search automatically for the updated driver software or Browse my computer for driver software. You will want to go with the former which your PC will automatically update the drivers for you.

  1. If any driver updates are available, it will be automatically installed.

Now there is something lacklustre about asking your machine to lookup drivers for you, and it may or may not do a great job of it. Which is why, regardless if you have found new driver updates or if you didn’t find any driver updates, you will need to google “download latest drivers for _enter your brand_ PC” yourself and download the drivers from your PC manufacturer’s website.

We have included driver pages for a few brands below for convenience:

If you cannot find your PC manufacturer’s drivers page whether by referring to the list above or googling it yourself, then follow Method 8 and proceed with contacting your PC manufacturer directly for the drivers as well assisting you on this issue. Some PC manufacturer’s like HP may take down their driver’s page; hence you will need to contact them directly for the updated drivers.

Once you’ve downloaded the updated drivers using both ways, try once again to use your camera with Microsoft Teams to see if it works.

4. Reset The Camera.

The third method is to reset your camera.

If you’re using an external webcam, then try unplugging it, wait for 5-10 seconds and then plug it back in. After that, proceed with the steps below. If your camera comes integrated with your PC, then proceed with the steps below as no reset it required.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Using your Windows Search (bottom-left), search for Device Manager. Select the Device Manager option when it appears in the search results.
  2. Next, in Device Manager, under the Action menu (at the top), select Scan for hardware changes.

  1. Wait for the scan to complete. The scan will reinstall updated drivers and make sure any changes made to the machine is accounted for.

Once done, restart your PC and then try using your camera once again with Microsoft Teams to see if the issue is fixed.

5. Try Using a Different Camera.

A few users have found that trying a different camera/webcam helped to identify that the camera or their webcam was faulty.

If you have a spare webcam with you, try to plug it into your PC and see if the new camera works with Microsoft Teams compared to the old one. Now if you find that it does, then you know that the old webcam was the issue.

If your old camera is one that comes integrated with your PC, then proceed with Method 8 and consider visiting your PC manufacturer or whoever you bought the PC from to assist in replacing the camera.

6. Re-register Your Camera.

This method can be a little complex for some as it involves using the Windows Powershell to re-register the camera. However, we have made the steps simple with instructions where all you need to do is copy-paste the one-line of code given into Windows Powershell. 🙂

Re-registering the camera can be thought of as re-establishing the camera connection so that the system detects it accurately. Credit goes to user Kapil Arya on this suggestion over on the Microsoft forums.

Here’s how to re-register your camera on Windows PC:

  1. Firstly, press both your Windows key and X key together. This will bring up a menu on the left from which you need to select Windows PowerShell (Admin).  You will be prompted with a message saying Do you want this app to make changes to this device which simply just hit Yes.

  1. Next, copy/paste the following line of code into the Windows PowerShell and press the Enter key:

Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.WindowsCamera | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

  1. Lastly, close the Windows PowerShell and see if this resolves the camera issue with Microsoft TeamsDone.

7. Check for Windows Updates.

Checking for new Windows updates and then installing them can help fix the various issues that you may or may not have encountered.

With regards to our camera’s issue, perhaps a new Windows update has already been released by Microsoft to address this issue and judging by how frequent Microsoft updates the Windows operating system.

You may refer to the Windows 10 update history page to find out more on what each Windows update addresses.

8. Contact Your PC Manufacturer’s Support.

If none of the above methods have worked to fix this issue, then you need to get in touch with your PC manufacturer (Dell, HP, Acer etc.) or meet your PC manufacturer’s technical support site or whichever vendor you bought the PC from.

We have provided below the respective contact pages for each PC manufacturer for your convenience. Do take note that the links below may be removed or redirected at any time by the PC manufacturer. If your PC manufacturer is not in the list feel free to request it by either commenting down below or google it on your own.

Here’s the list of contact pages of the major PC manufacturers around:

Once you’ve gotten in touch with your PC manufacturer’s technical help, either set up an appointment and bring the PC in or schedule an on-site visit which is appropriate for large PCs and workstations.

You will also want to make sure that you’re under warranty before anything is replaced with the machine. If the camera is found faulty, then a replacement will most likely be required.

We hope that this guide has helped fix Microsoft Teams from not detecting your camera. If you have questions, please feel free to leave a comment below, and we will love to help you out. ❤

If this guide helped you, please share it. 🙂

  1. None of the above helped. I am using the Teams desktop app, and Microsoft Teams was not appearing in the list of apps under the Camera Privacy settings. The fix that worked for me was to reinstall the Teams desktop app. Fortunately this does not require Admin rights to reinstall. My camera worked straight away after the reinstall. Until then, Teams couldn’t even detect that I had a camera.
