Social media just gets creepier by the day.
Last year, Snapchat came out with a feature called the Snap Maps which was basically a map which shows you where you are currently at right now or when you’ve been last spotted to every one of your friends who takes a look at the map.
Then we’ve had Facebook’s copy-pasting Snapchat fiasco where they copied the main feature, the one where users take 24-hour vanishing snaps, and used it for all their services: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram.
If that’s not justified on how it’s creepy enough, then now Instagram has added a new feature (without, of course, asking for your permission for whether it should be turned on), and that’s the Activity Status feature.
The Activity Status is a feature you’ve been familiar with (it’s pretty similar to the one you have on your Facebook Messenger). Simply, it’s an indicator that allows your friends (and just about anyone who follows you) to see when you are currently active and when you were last active on Instagram.
For some this presents as an opportunity to show your followers when you’re active, but for others it’s something that unnecessarily invades their privacy.
In this quick an simple guide, I’ll show you how you to turn off Activity Status on Instagram and help protect your privacy. 🙂
How to Turn Off Activity Status on Instagram: 2 Steps
Step 1: Jump into your profile and then tap on Settings. (if you’re on iPhone it looks like a cog right next to Edit Profile, if you’re on Android it’s the one with the three vertical dots to your top right hand corner)
Step 2: Finally, all you have to do is just scroll down and under the header Settings and you will see Show Activity Status at the very bottom. Just disable Show Activity Status.
Now you’re friends will no longer see when you’re online or when you were last online.
Share this guide with your friends and family and help them learn about how they can protect their privacy by hiding their Instagram activity by turning off this little feature in their settings. 🙂
