How to Fix Lags on Fortnite

Want to know how you can fix lags on Fortnite?

Fortnite is among the most popular online games in the world. With over 125 million registered users, Fortnite has cemented its place in the gaming community and become a staple in Esports events.

Despite its status, Fortnite is not free from issues.

One of the most annoying problems you can encounter on Fortnite is lags. While this is a regular occurrence in online games, it doesn’t mean that you just have to bear with it.

When playing FPS titles, stutters and lags are the last things you want.

Most of the time lags on Fortnite are caused by slow network connections or faulty game servers. However, it can also be due to broken drivers, outdated software, or third-party applications.

To help you out, we’ve decided to make a guide for fixing lags on Fortnite.

Let’s get started!

1. Check Fortnite Servers.

One of the first things you can do when you encounter lags on Fortnite is checking the platform’s servers. Fortnite’s team could be performing maintenance on their system, or an unexpected problem occurred.

To confirm this, visit Epic Game’s status page and see if Fortnite is operational.

Fortnite Status

If not, it means that the servers are down. In this case, the only thing you can do is wait for Fortnite’s team to resolve the issue.

On the other hand, you can proceed to the next solution below if Fortnite’s servers are running.

2. Restart Your Device.

Your device may have run into temporary errors that cause connectivity issues. This explains why you encounter lags and stutters on Fortnite.

To fix this, restart your device to refresh your system resources.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. First, open the Start Menu on your Taskbar
  2. After that, go to the Power Options tab.
  3. Lastly, click on Restart
Restart your PC

Once done, go back to Fortnite and check if the problem is solved.

3. Check Your Network Connection.

A slow or unstable network connection is one of the most common causes of lags on Fortnite. Since you’re playing an online game, you’ll need a decent internet connection to run the game smoothly.

To check if your network is the culprit, run a test using Fast.com to measure its current upload and download speed.

Speed Test

If the result indicates an issue with your network, restart your modem or router to re-establish the link with your service provider’s servers. Disconnect your router from the outlet and wait for at least five seconds before reconnecting it.

Restart Router

Once done, run another test to confirm if the restart worked. If not, contact your provider and ask them to fix their service.

4. Turn Off VPN.

Virtual private networks could also be the reason you experience lags on Fortnite. While VPNs work great for protecting your data, they can also cause connectivity issues to your system if you’re not connected to a well-optimized server.

To avoid this problem, we suggest disabling your VPN when playing online games.

PureVPN

If you’re not comfortable disabling your protection, we recommend switching to PureVPN. Unlike other services, PureVPN works well with most applications and uses high-speed servers to ensure fast and reliable connections.

5. Update Your Network Drivers.

Your network controller may not be functioning correctly, which causes lags and stutters on Fortnite. To rule this out, update your network drivers to the latest version possible to patch bugs and other errors.

Here’s what you need to do to update your drivers on Windows:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows + X keys to open the Quick Menu.
  2. After that, click on Device Manager and expand the Network Adapters tab.
  3. Finally, right-click on your network controller and choose Update Driver

Reboot your system after updating your drivers and check if the problem is solved.

6. Close Other Applications.

Other applications might be consuming your bandwidth, which causes lags on Fortnite. To avoid this, close down unnecessary applications running in the background to ensure that your bandwidth is dedicated for Fortnite.

After closing background applications, go back to Fortnite and see if the problem is solved.

7. Contact Fortnite.

At this point, the last thing you can do is call the attention of Fortnite’s team.

Visit Epic Games’ Help Center and get in touch with their customer support to ask for assistance regarding the issue you’ve been experiencing. Provide your account details, your ISP, and other necessary information to help their team assess the situation faster.
