How to Fix League of Legends Not Updating

Can’t figure out why League of Legends is not updating on your PC?

Updates are a crucial part of games, especially with online MOBAs like League of Legends. Having over 200 million players worldwide, Riot makes it a point to release patches to optimize the game and fix errors that may have occurred.

Although updates make the game better, there are instances when it becomes a problem for some players.

Recently, there have been complaints from users who run into issues while patching their League of Legends client. As it turns out, the game refuses to download or install the patch without giving out any error message or code.

Most of the time, this issue occurs when your network connection is slow or unstable. However, it can also be due to lack of storage space, improper configurations, or third-party apps.

In this guide, we will show you how to fix League of Legends if it’s not updating on your computer.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Restart Your Computer.

Before tweaking your configurations, we suggest restarting your computer if League of Legends is not updating. This should reload your system resources and eliminate temporary errors that may have occurred.

See the steps below to reboot your computer:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows key to open the Start Menu
  2. After that, access the Power Options tab.
  3. Finally, choose Restart to reboot your system.

Go back to the game afterward and see if it’s updating.

2. Disable Antivirus.

Third-party antivirus is a great way to prevent viruses and malware from entering your system. However, some antivirus software tends to become too protective and block even legitimate applications from accessing your network and system.

If League of Legends is not updating on your computer, try turning off any antivirus you’ve installed. You can also try adding the game to your whitelist if applicable.

3. Check Your Internet Connection.

When updating games or downloading content online, you’ll need to have a stable connection to avoid issues. If League of Legends is not updating on your computer, it might indicate a problem with your network.

To confirm this, perform a test using Fast.com to measure your network’s upload and download bandwidth.

If the result indicates a problem with your connection, power cycle your router to refresh the link with your ISP’s servers. Disconnect your router from the outlet and wait for at least five seconds before plugging it back in.

Once done, re-run the test to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your ISP and ask them to fix the issue.

4. Check If You Have Enough Storage.

Game updates nowadays can reach 5-10GB. This doesn’t include the total file size of the game that is already installed on your computer. If you have a lot of games installed, it is possible that you’ve run out of storage for the update.

Try checking your storage drives and see if you still have room left to download the League of Legends update.

5. Run League of Legends As Admin.

League of Legends might not have proper permissions to access your storage. If you cannot update the game, we recommend running the client as an administrator to give it full access to your system.

Follow the guide below to run LoL as admin:

  1. On your desktop, locate League of Legends and right-click on it.
  2. Now, choose Properties and go to the Compatibility tab.
  3. Finally, ensure that ‘Run this Program as an Administrator is checked and save the changes.

Relaunch the game and check if it will update.

6. Turn Off VPN.

Virtual private networks or VPNs are third-party tools that protect your system and data from hackers and harmful entities online. While they work great for keeping you safe online, they can also cause issues with your network.

If you are having a hard time updating League of Legends on your computer, try turning off your VPN.

On the other hand, try switching to PureVPN if you don’t want to go online without protection. Unlike other services, it works well with most applications and keeps your connection fast and stable.

PureVPN also works well with streaming apps like HBO Max, Netflix, and Disney+.

7. Reinstall League of Legends.

At this point, the last thing you can do is reinstall League of Legends on your computer. This should ensure that you have the latest version of the game installed.

See the steps below to delete League of Legends:

  1. Access the Control Panel on your computer.
  2. Next, click on Uninstall a Program and locate League of Legends
  3. Finally, right-click on the game and select Uninstall. Follow the on-screen prompts to delete the game.
