Fix: Messenger Calls Not Working on Chrome

Can’t figure out why Messenger calls are not working on Chrome?

Facebook Messenger is available on multiple platforms. It also features a dedicated web app that allows you to access your messages anywhere using a browser.

Unfortunately, users have been facing issues with the platform when they access it using Google Chrome. Based on the reports, Facebook Messenger calls are not working correctly on Chrome.

Some reported that their camera or mic is not working, while other users can’t even start a video call.

Most of the time, improper configurations and lack of system permissions are the culprits for this problem. However, it can also be due to faulty servers, corrupted browsing data, or a slow internet connection.

If you are among these users, we’ve got you covered.

Today, we will show you what to do if Messenger calls are not working on Google Chrome.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Check Messenger Servers.

When you encounter issues with Facebook Messenger, the first thing you should do is check the servers. Since Messenger is an online platform, its servers play a major part in delivering content and features.

Unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t have a dedicated server status page. However, you can use sites like Downdetector to check if there are outages.

If the servers are currently down, the best thing you can do is wait.

On the other hand, you can head to the next solution below if Facebook Messenger’s servers are online to start troubleshooting the problem.

2. Restart Your Computer.

Restarting your computer is one of the most effective ways to fix temporary errors on apps. If you can’t perform calls on Messenger for Chrome, restart your computer to reload its resources.

For Windows:

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start Menu
  2. Next, access the Power Options tab.
  3. Finally, click on Restart

For macOS:

  1. First, open the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your display.
  2. Now, choose the Restart option.
  3. Confirm your action by clicking the Restart button in the dialog box.

Go back to Messenger afterward to check if the problem is solved.

3. Re-Login to Your Account.

Some users were able to solve the problem by simply logging out of their accounts. A bug or glitch may have occurred on your current session, which prevents you from performing calls on Chrome.

Here’s how you can end your session:

  1. On your account, click on the down arrow button beside the Notification tab in the upper right corner of your screen.
  2. Next, click the Log Out option to stop your current session.
  3. After a few minutes, re-login to your Facebook account.

Try performing another call to check if the problem is solved.

4. Check Your Network Connection.

Compared to sending messages, performing calls on Messenger require more bandwidth. If Messenger calls are not working on Chrome, it might indicate a problem with your network connection.

To confirm this, run a test using Fast.com to measure your network’s upload and download bandwidth.

If the test indicates a problem with your connection, restart your router or modem to re-establish the link between your device and your ISP. Disconnect your router from the outlet and wait for 5 to 10 seconds before plugging it back in.

Once done, run another test to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your service provider and ask them to fix the issue.

5. Check Your Privacy Settings.

When making Messenger calls on Chrome, the site will need to access your computer’s microphone and camera. If the website lacks the permission to do so, problems can occur, and the feature might not work.

To avoid problems, check your privacy settings and ensure that Facebook is allowed to access your mic and camera.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. On Chrome, click on More Options and access the Settings
  2. Next, go to the Privacy and Security tab.
  3. Access the Site Settings section.

  1. Scroll down to the Permissions tab and click on Camera
  2. Finally, ensure that Facebook is allowed to access your device. Go back to the previous page and do the same thing for your mic.

Once done, try making another call to check if the problem is solved.

6. Disable Extensions.

Browser extensions are third-party tools that provide additional features to your browser and the websites you visit. However, not all sites work with extensions and could interfere with how they function.

If you can’t perform Messenger calls on Chrome, try disabling your browser extensions first. See the steps below to help you out:

  1. First, open Google Chrome and access the Settings
  2. After that, click on the Extensions tab in the side menu.
  3. Lastly, disable all your extensions and restart Chrome

Go back to Facebook and see if you can make a call.

7. Clear Chrome Data.

Google Chrome takes advantage of your browsing activity to enhance its performance. It stores caches and cookies on your device, which can be used to load up previously visited websites faster.

However, caches and cookies accumulate over time and could become corrupted. When this happens, sites and features may not work correctly.

To fix this, follow the guide below to clear your browsing data:

  1. On Google Chrome, click on More Options and access the Settings
  2. Now, go to Privacy and Security and click on Clear Browsing Data.
  3. After that, change the Time Range to All Time and include caches and cookies in the process.
  4. Finally, click the Clear Data button to start.

See the steps below to reset Chrome:

  1. First, access the Settings
  2. Inside the Settings, expand the Advanced tab and click on Reset Settings
  3. Lastly, click on ‘Restore Settings to their Original Defaults’.
