No Sound on iTunes in Windows 10? Here’s the Fix!
If you know any Apple or Mac users, their default playback software is probably iTunes.
Several Apple users, don’t use Mac devices though, which means that they probably use the Windows edition for iTunes. With the Windows 10 update, some users started reporting functionality issues with their iTunes app. The issues that were raised include no sound on the iTunes app on their Windows 10 device, or the sound is muffled and scratchy.
Today, we’ll go over nine fixes you can apply to address no playback sound in iTunes’ on your Windows device.
1. Check For iTunes Updates For Windows 10.
The first way to fix iTunes’ no audio playback error is to update your iTunes app to its latest version, since Apple has dropped the 12.10.11 version to the public.
- By default, when a new version is released, you’ll see a pop-up asking whether you wish to update to the newest version. Click Download iTunes to proceed.
- If you don’t have a notification, navigate to Help on the top left corner
- Then click Check for Updates.
- When the new iTunes is successfully installed on your Windows 10 computer, try playing some music to test if the problem has been fixed.
2. Update Your Windows 10 Audio Drivers.
As we know, iTunes was designed to seamlessly function with Mac OS, so there might be times that iTunes doesn’t work smoothly on Windows OS. If you still have issues after installing the latest iTunes version, the issue might be a result of software conflict between iTunes and Windows themselves. This can be fixed by updating the audio drivers on your device.
- First, navigate on your taskbar’s search box and type Device Manager.
- Then, select Sound, Video, and Game Controllers from the list that appears.
- After that, you should be able to see all audio devices on your PC.
- Finally, right-click each item and choose Update Driver Software. You can even choose to uninstall it and reinstall it later when necessary.
3. Change Audio Playback Preferences In iTunes.
If none of the previous fixes for your Windows worked, the issue might be in iTunes its self. Before you apply this fix, make sure that all of your volume sliders are maxed out!
- First, navigate to Edit in iTunes
- Then, choose Preferences, which will bring you to the iTunes settings.
- After that, click on Playback from the menu and find the Play Audio Using option.
- Change from Windows Audio Session to Direct Sound
- Finally, relaunch iTunes again.
4. Turn Off Audio Enhancement in iTunes.
This is the second fix you can apply in iTunes. iTunes has an equalizer functionality, where you can fine-tune specific frequencies, customize the sound for different genres, rooms in your home, or specific speakers. Also, you can add depth and enliven the quality of your music by adjusting the Sound Enhancer. In our fix, we will try turning it off to see if it makes a difference. Here is how:
- First, open iTunes
- Then, click on the Edit menu and select Preferences.
- Click the Playback tab.
- Finally, deselect Sound Enhancer.
5. Turn Off Audio Enhancement On Your Device
Your PC has audio enhancements too, not just iTunes. This means that the no sound in iTunes on your Windows 10 device can be the result of Sound Enhancers of your PC. To resolve this:
- First, open your Control Panel.
- Then, click Hardware and Sound.
- Select Sound.
- After that, click the Playback tab.
- The next step is to right-click the Default Device and select Properties.
- Click the Enhancements tab.
- Check the Disable all enhancements option or the Disable all sound effects check box.
- Finally, open iTunes and try playing some music to check if the fix worked.
6. Repair Your Music Files In iTunes.
Another issue that you might be facing, can be the type of music files you are playing in iTunes. For example, they might be encoded in AAC while iTunes supports MPEG-4 encoded files.
- In order to ensure compatibility, you have to check all the music files you have uploaded to iTunes whether they are AAC format or MPEG-4 AAC format.
- Then, check if some of the music files have been damaged or maybe some of the codecs of the music files have been lost which results in the no sound problem with iTunes.
7. Find Troubleshooting in Your Audio Devices.
If none of the previous fixes worked with your iTunes not producing sound on your Windows 10, you can use your PC’s software to check for Audio Devices malfunctions. You can run your Audio troubleshooter by:
- First, click on Start
- Then select Settings and click on System
- After that, select Sound and click Troubleshoot.
- Run the troubleshoot on your computer and check if it detects any issues.
8. Delete and Reinstall iTunes on Your Device.
If you tried all of the fixes we suggested, and the no sound problem with your iTunes persists you have to try to uninstall iTunes from Windows and then re-download and install again.
- First, navigate to your search box and type Remove Programs
- Then open the window for uninstalling programs and find iTunes
- Click on it and select Uninstall
- Repeat the process for Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, Apple Application Support 32-bit and 64-bit depending on your version
In most cases, removing iTunes and its related components from the Control Panel will remove all supporting files belonging to those programs but in some rare cases, files might be left behind.
