How to Fix Packet Loss on League of Legends

Do you experience packet loss on League of Legends?

League of Legends is among the leading online games in the world, with over 200 million active users. It is one of the best MOBA games and regularly hosts tournaments and world championships.

Being a very popular game, we’d think that League of Legends is flawless. Sadly, this is not the case. Like other titles, it can suffer from downtimes and errors.

One of the most common problems with League of Legends and other online games is packet loss. This occurs when one or more packets of data traveling across a network fail to reach their destination.

Most of the time, this issue is caused by a slow or unstable internet connection. On the other hand, it can also be due to third-party apps, improper user configurations, or server-related problems.

In this guide, we will show you how to fix packet loss on League of Legends.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Restart Your Computer.

Before tweaking your configurations, we suggest restarting your computer if you encounter network-related problems. This should reload your system resources and eliminate temporary errors that may have occurred during use.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. On your computer, access the Start Menu by clicking the Windows icon in the Taskbar
  2. After that, open the Power Options tab.
  3. Finally, click Restart to reboot your system.

Go back to League of Legends to check if the problem is solved.

2. Close Online Applications.

Being an online game, League of Legends requires stable internet to connect you with other players. If you encounter packet loss, it’s possible that other applications on your computer are consuming bandwidth.

To avoid issues, we suggest closing unused applications to give more space for League of Legends to operate.

3. Check Your Internet Connection.

A slow or unstable internet connection could also be the reason for packet loss on League of Legends. To confirm this, we suggest running a test on your network using Fast.com to measure its current speed.

If the test result indicates a problem with your connection, restart your modem or router to re-establish the link with your ISP’s servers. Unplug your router from the outlet and wait for 5 to 10 seconds before reconnecting it.

Once done, perform another test to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your provider and ask them to fix their service.

4. Turn Off VPN.

Virtual private networks are third-party applications that protect your online data from hackers and websites that track your activity. While they work great for the most part, they can also cause issues with your network.

If you encounter packet loss on League of Legends, try disabling your VPN before joining a game.

PureVPN

On the other hand, you can try switching to a reputable provider like PureVPN if you don’t want to go online without protection. Unlike other VPNs, it doesn’t interfere with your connection and keeps your network fast and reliable.

PureVPN also works well with streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max.

5. Update Network Drivers.

Device drivers are an essential part of Windows. Without it, your system cannot control the hardware connected to your computer. If you encounter network-related issues, it might be a sign that your network drivers are outdated or corrupted.

To fix this, see the guide below to update your network drivers:

  1. First, press the Windows + X keys on your keyboard to open the Quick Access Menu
  2. Click on Device Manager and expand the Network Adapters tab.
  3. Lastly, right-click on your network controller and choose Update Driver. Follow the prompts to proceed.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. On your computer, access the Start Menu and look for Command Prompt
  2. Next, click on Run as an Administrator
  3. Inside CMD, type ‘ipconfig /flushdns’ and hit the Enter key

7. Use A Wired Connection.

If you are connected to a wireless connection, you can try switching to a wired connection. Compared to Wi-Fi, a good old ethernet cable will provide a much more stable internet connection, which is crucial for any online game.

Ethernet cables can also deliver faster internet speeds, which allows you to utilize the full potential of your connection.

If using a LAN cable is not possible, try using a Wi-Fi repeater to improve the wireless reception in the area of your computer.
