Ever since the first introduction of the Bixby button with the Galaxy S8, we Galaxy users have had a hard time putting up with a physical button on the side of our phone which is only there if you want to call Bixby, Samsung’s AI personal assistant (which let’s be honest it’s mostly useless).
The lack of remapping the button to something else that’s practically more useful say for example taking a screenshot or launch Google Assistant has been a tough mission and Samsung has tried many times to stop and block all apps that tried to do so.
The good news is with the new Galaxy S9 it is possible to remap the Bixby button thanks to an app called bxActions. There’s tons of other apps out there which does allow you to do so but bxActions is the forefront runner when it comes to stability and simplicity. The bad news? We’re not sure how long the app can escape through Samsung’s fingers but as for what matters now the app works and you can remap the Bixby button.
In this guide I’ll show you how to remap the Bixby button on your new Galaxy S9 and make it so that your phone is useful to you in every way.
What you’ll need.
• Make sure that Bixby is fully enabled on your device because the app, bxActions, that you’ll be installing won’t work if you have Bixby disabled.
• Know that at some point later Samsung may decide to be a jerk and block the app from working on Galaxy S9 (this was the case with the Galaxy S8). I’ll update this post if that happens.
How to Remap Bixby Button on Galaxy S9 (No Root): 7 Steps
Step 1: Go ahead jump into your Google Play Store and search for “bxActions“. I have attached the link for you below if you fancy to get it done right away from your device.
• bxActions from Google Play Store. (Free)
Step 2: Once you have bxActions installed, open up the app and tap on Next on the welcome page. Now before you can use it, you’ll need to grant a few permissions for it to get it to fully work. So tap on Get foreground app which enables access for your usage data and get things started.
Step 3: Next, you’ll automatically be brought to your Usage Data Access page in your Settings. Over here tap on bxActions and then switch on Allow usage tracking.
Step 4: You’re almost there! Now once you’ve done that you’ll be taken back to the app’s permissions app. The next thing you’ll need to do is tap on Get button events which enables access for accessibility.
Step 5: Again you’ll automatically be brought back to your Accessibility settings in your device’s Settings. Over here just scroll down and tap on bxActions – Bixby button. Then switch on the switch which says OFF and then just tap OK on the popup.
Step 6: Great job! Next, jump back into your bxActions app and then finally tap Done.
If for some rare reason the bxActions is not enabled automatically, then just tap on the play icon to start the service manually. Then it’ll take you to a Buttons page. Over here just follow the previous step to turn on Bixby button. Once that’s done you can exit out of Buttons after you’be made sure to grant the permissions it needs and then finally head back into the app.
Step 7: You did it! Now let’s choose an action that we want our Bixby button to do instead. So in the menu of your bxActions app, tap on Actions and then Bixby.
Step 8: From there just tap on Standard Action to jump into the Choose Action page. You can choose to make your Bixby button do tons of things: you can turn the button to a home or back button, a button which opens up your camera app, bring up your power menu, toggle the do not disturb switch, and tons more.
There is a premium version for $2.99 which does unlock more features such as the option to make both your volume buttons for added commands or be used as to turn on your flashlight, launching Google Now right from your lock screen, or even if you wish to take screenshots.
That’s it! Play around with it and find what’s most comfortable for you.
