How to Fix Slow Download or Upload Speed on PS4

Are you experiencing slow download or upload speed on your PS4?

The Playstation has been available in the market since 2013, and it has seen a few versions across that time. In fact, there are three models of the PS4, the original, slim, and pro version, that supports 4K resolution and better performance.

With the release of the PS4, online gaming on consoles has reached its peak since more games offer online gaming capabilities.

As we all know, the Playstation 4 has a dedicated Wi-Fi antenna, which allows users to connect to their network without the need for long ethernet cables.

Unfortunately, convenience has a price, and you may not experience your network’s full capabilities when using a wireless connection.

One of the most common issues about wireless connections is reduced network speed. This often happens when your PS4 is not getting enough wireless reception due to signal interference.

If you’re experiencing the same thing, keep reading.

Today, we will show you how to fix slow download or upload speed on your PS4.

Let’s get right into it!

1. Run A Speed Test.

If you experience lags, delays, or slow downloads on your PS4, the first thing that you should do is perform a speed test to know if the problem is with your network connection or your Playstation.

You can do this by following the steps below:

  1. First, open the Settings page of your Playstation 4
  2. After that, access the Network tab.
  3. Lastly, select Test Internet Connection

If the test shows that your current download or upload speed is not close to what it should be, the problem is with your network.

Proceed to the next solution below to address the issue.

2. Restart Your Playstation.

The easiest way to fix most problems on your Playstation is by restarting its software. This will allow your console to reload its resources, which may have encountered a temporary bug or glitch during use.

Check out the guide below to restart your PS4:

  1. First, access the Quick Menu by holding down the PS button on your controller.
  2. Now, go to the Power tab and highlight Restart PS4.
  3. Lastly, press the O or X button on your controller to proceed.

After restarting your Playstation, run another speed test to check if you’re now getting the correct download and upload speed.

3. Restart Your Network.

Another thing that you can do is restart your network router or modem. This will prompt your device to re-establish its connection with your internet service provider’s servers and fix the slow download or upload speed on your PS4.

To restart your modem or router, locate its power chord and unplug it from the wall outlet for 5 to 10 seconds. After that, reconnect the power cable and wait for your modem to initialize.

Restart Router

Once done, go back to your PS4, run another test, and see if you are now getting the correct speeds as indicated on your monthly plan. If you continue to experience network issues even on your other devices, we suggest you get in touch with your ISP and ask them to fix their service.

4. Disconnect Other Devices.

If you have other devices connected to your wireless network, some of them may be hogging your network’s bandwidth causing slow download and upload speed to your PS4. To solve this, we recommend disconnecting your devices one by one while running a speed test after every device to identify which consumes the most network bandwidth.

Once you’ve identified the problematic device, leave it disconnected for the meantime while you are playing or downloading something on your Playstation.

5. Move Your Console / Router Closer.

Another thing that you can do is reconsider the current position of your router or PS4. If using a LAN cable is not an option for you, try moving the network router closer to your Playstation or vice versa.

Since wireless connections are dependent on reception, moving your devices closer to each other will lessen the interference between your devices and improve the performance of your wireless network.

6. Use A LAN Cable.

If moving your console or router is not an option, you can always go the traditional route of using a wired connection for your PS4. LAN cables are more reliable for data transfer and internet speed than a wireless connection since it has lower latency.

If your network router is far from your Playstation, we recommend using a CAT5e or CAT6 LAN cable, which supports speeds of up to 1000 Mbps at a maximum distance of 100 meters.

7. Disable Remote Play.

For unknown reasons, some users were able to fix slow download or upload speed on their PS4 by disabling Remote Play. This feature on the PS4 allows you to create a wireless network where other devices can connect to your console and access its content.

If you’ve used this feature before, try disabling it and see if the problem goes away.

Here’s how you can turn off Remote Play on the PS4:

  1. Access the Settings of your PS4 using your controller.
  2. Now, go to Remote Play Connection Settings
  3. Finally, ensure that the Enable Remote Play option is unchecked.
