Is Snapchat Down? Server Status and How to Fix

Have a feeling that Snapchat servers are down?

Like any application, Snapchat has its own servers to make the platform run online. Without it, you won’t be able to interact with other users and access Snapchat’s features.

To ensure that their servers are well optimized, system maintenance is necessary, which could cause temporary problems on the app. If you think that Snapchat servers are down, keep reading.

Most of the time, issues that occur on Snapchat, like problems posting and viewing snaps, are caused by offline servers. Unfortunately, server related issues are only fixable on Snapchat’s end, and changes on your device won’t do anything.

However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t alleviate the situation while Snapchat works on their servers.

Today, we will show you a few tips to improve the situation if Snapchat servers are down.

Before making changes on your device, check Snapchat’s server status first to verify if it is down.

Once you’ve confirmed that their servers are offline, head down below and try the suggested methods.

1. Restart Snapchat.

The best way to eliminate all sorts of errors on applications is by restarting them. Doing this allows your device to reload all the application resources, which removes any temporary error that may have occurred.

On Android and iOS devices with an all-screen display, you can restart Snapchat through the app switcher. Swipe upwards from the bottom of your screen until you see the app switcher. Now, find Snapchat and flick it upwards to close it.

For iOS devices with a Home button, tap it twice to open the app switcher. After that, drag Snapchat upwards until it is removed from the list.

After closing Snapchat, go back to your home screen and reopen the app.

2. Turn Off VPN.

If you use VPN services on your network, you may want to turn it off in the meantime. VPNs change your IP address randomly, which can interfere with how your network functions.

Since Snapchat’s servers are already having issues, the last thing that you want is third-party programs like VPNs interfering with your network.

Try to disable your VPN and see if the situation improves.

3. Check for Updates.

Snapchat releases updates from time to time to patch bugs and glitches that arise on their application. If you haven’t updated Snapchat yet on your device, now is the best time to do so.

It is possible that the version installed on your device already has a problem, which makes the situation worse for Snapchat’s servers.

On Android, you can update Snapchat by doing the following:

  1. First, open Google Play Store from your home screen and tap on the Menu button.
  2. Now, tap on My Apps & Games.
  3. Finally, tap on the Update button if the Play Store detected an update for Snapchat

For iOS devices, follow the guide below to update Snapchat.

  1. On your home screen, tap on the App Store to open it.
  2. Tap on the Updates tab to check for possible updates on all the apps installed on your device.
  3. Finally, tap on Update if the App Store found an update for Snapchat

After updating Snapchat, try to use it for a few minutes to check if the problem is resolved.

4. Clear Your App Cache.

Snapchat takes advantage of app caches, which are temporary data composed of photos, scripts, or videos that help the application to run faster. However, these data can accumulate over time, and instead of assisting Snapchat, it can slow it down.

To fix this, try clearing your app cache and see if the situation improves.

  1. First, open Snapchat from your home screen and tap on the Profile icon on the main page.
  2. After that, open Settings and scroll down until you see the Clear Cache button.
  3. Now, tap on Clear Cache
  4. Lastly, tap on Continue for Android and Clear All for iOS to proceed with the process.

After clearing your app cache, restart Snapchat and use it as you would to see if any problems would occur.

5. Reinstall Snapchat.

If deleting your app cache was not helpful, we suggest that you try reinstalling the app. It is possible that some of its installation files got badly corrupted and are no longer fixable.

On Android, check out the guide below on how to reinstall Snapchat.

  1. First, go to your home screen and press Snapchat’s icon until you see a selection screen.
  2. After that, tap on Uninstall and follow the on-screen prompts to remove the app from your device.

6. Check and Reset Your Internet.

Since Snapchat servers are down, the last thing you want is your network connection, making the situation worse. Connecting to a problematic server is already complicated, and using a slow internet would only make it harder for your device.

Try to run a speed test using Fast.com to ensure that your network is running properly.

If the test result shows that your network is running slow, try to restart your router. Find the power cable, which is usually at the back of your router, and unplug it. Now, wait for 5 to 10 seconds and plug back in the power cable.

Once your router has restarted, run another speed test to check your network’s performance. If it continues to run slow, contact your ISP immediately and ask them to fix their service.
