How to Fix System Restore Point Error Code 0x80042308 on Windows 10

2. Go to the System Protection tab and select the Local Disk (C:) (System).

4. Click on the circle against Disable system protection to enable the option and select Apply to save the changes you just made. 

5. If a window pops up to confirm the action, click on Yes. Doing so will clear all the previous restore points on Windows, including the corrupt ones. 
6. Now that you have cleared the previous points, you must turn this feature back on to be able to create new points in the future. 
7. To do so, follow the first 3 steps again but this time, click on the circle against Turn on system protection. 
8. Select Apply to save the changes and then restart your PC. 

If corrupt system restore points were causing the issue, clearing them will resolve it. You should now be able to create new points and use them without any issues. 

2. Restart Volume Shadow Copy. 

A Volume Shadow Copy Service creates backup copies of your operating system’s files and volumes.

Several users found a corrupt Volume Shadow Copy to be the culprit behind the System Restore Point error code 0x80042308 on Windows 10 and managed to resolve the issue by restarting the Volume Shadow Copy. 

If clearing the previous restore points did not help you resolve the issue, then try restarting the Volume Shadow Copy. 

Here is how you can do that:

1. Type Services in the search bar and click on Open.
2. Inside the Services window, locate Volume Shadow Copy and right-click on it. 

3. Select Stop to disable the service temporarily. 
4. Now right-click on the Volume Shadow Copy again and this time, click on Start.
5. Once done, select Properties by right-clicking the same service. 
6. Inside the General tab, click on the dropdown menu against Startup type and choose Manual.

7. Also, make sure that the Service status is Running. 
8. Finally, click on OK to save the changes you just made and check if doing so resolved the issue at hand. 

Hopefully, doing so will resolve the 0x80042308 error on Windows 10. 

3. Run CHKDSK Scan. 

There are times when the System Restore Points fail to work because of the issues within your hard drive. 

Such issues are common to occur but luckily, Windows comes with several built-in utilities that can help you resolve these problems in no time. 

To resolve issues within the hard drive, we would be running a Check Disk (CHKDSK) scan. This scan will identify the issues within your hard drive, and attempt to fix them with little to no user input. 

Here is what you need to do:

1. Type cmd in the search bar and click on Run as administrator to launch elevated Command Prompt. 
2. Inside Command Prompt, type the command mentioned below and hit Enter. 

chkdsk / r

3. Wait for the scan to complete and then restart your PC. 

If a corruption error within your hard drive was causing the issue, following the steps mentioned above will resolve it. In case you want to scan your whole system for issues and fix them, jump to Method 5. 

4. Increase Disk Space Usage Value. 

Windows uses the hard disk to store information when the memory of the operating system reaches its limit. 

System Restore Points are also stored on hard disks, and typically occupy around three to five percent space on each disk. If all the space on your hard disks is occupied, System Restore will delete the old points to make space for the new ones. 

If your screen is displaying the error at hand even after following the troubleshooting methods we mentioned above, then there is a possibility that the disk space usage on your operating system is set to 0 instead of 3 or 5%. 

The simplest way to resolve this issue is to increase the disk space usage value. 

This is a straightforward process, and will not take much of your time.

1. Type Create a restore point in the search bar and click on Open.
2. Go to the System Protection tab and select Local Disk (C:) (System).
3. Click Configure to proceed. 
4. In the next window, check the slider against Max Usage and drag it to 3%. 

5. Once done, click on Apply to save the changes and then hit OK. 
6. Finally, restart your PC. 

In case low disk space usage was causing the System Restore Point error code 0x80042308 on Windows 10, increasing the disk space will resolve the issue.
