How to Fix Telegram Slow on Mobile

Is Telegram slow on your mobile device?

Having over 300 million users, Telegram is considered to be one of the best cloud-based messaging platforms in the world.

Telegram has support for all major platforms including Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. It also has a dedicated web app that can be used to send and receive messages on any modern browser.

Despite Telegram’s status, this doesn’t save the platform from unexpected downtimes and performance issues.

If you are here, we can assume that Telegram is running slow on your mobile device.

Based on what we know, this problem on Telegram is usually caused by improper configurations or outdated software. However, it can also be due to corrupted files, server outages, and slow network connections.

Some users also experience this issue when running Telegram on an older iOS or Android device.

Today, we’ve decided to make a guide on how to fix Telegram if it’s running slow on mobile.

Let’s get started!

1. Check Telegram Servers.

When you encounter problems on Telegram, the first thing you should do is check the platform’s servers. Since Telegram is an online service, it relies on its servers to deliver content and features to your end.

To confirm if the problem is caused by the servers, you can use third-party tools like Downdetector to view Telegram’s status.

Telegram Server Status

If there are problems with the servers, the best thing you can do is wait. Sadly, server-related issues can only be resolved on Telegram’s end. This means that any changes on your device won’t affect the platform’s current status.

On the other hand, you can head to the next solution below if there are no problems on the server.

2. Restart Your Device.

Performance issues on mobile devices could be easily resolved with a simple restart. This should flush temporary caches from your system and stop background applications from running, which could be hogging RAM and CPU cores.

For Android users, follow the guide below to restart your device:

  1. Locate the Power button on your Android device.
  2. Next, hold it down to access the options screen.
  3. Finally, tap on Restart to reboot your system.

If you’re using an iPhone, here’s what you need to do:

  1. First, tap on the Assistive Touch to access it.
  2. After that, go to the Device tab and tap on More
  3. Lastly, tap Restart

Go back to Telegram after restarting your system to check if its performance improved.

3. Check Your Network.

A slow or unstable internet connection could also be the reason Telegram is running slow on your mobile device. While the app does not demand high-speed internet, you still need to have a decent connection to avoid issues.

To confirm if the problem is with your network, perform a test using Fast.com to measure your network’s speed.

Speed Test

If the result indicates an issue with your connection, we suggest restarting your modem or router to re-establish the link with your ISP’s servers. Remove your router from the power source and wait for at least five seconds before reconnecting it.

Once done, re-run the test on your network to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your provider and ask them to fix the issue.

4. Clear Telegram Data (Android).

Android apps like Telegram store temporary data on your device, which are used to improve their performance. Unfortunately, app caches accumulate over time and could become corrupted.

To ensure there are no corrupted files on your device, follow the steps below to clear Telegram’s data:

  1. First, access the app drawer on your device and locate Telegram
  2. After that, hold down its app icon and tap on App Info
  3. Lastly, go to the Storage & Cache tab and tap on Clear Cache and Clear Data

Re-login to your Telegram account afterward and check if the problem is solved.

5. Close Unnecessary Apps.

While most devices today are optimized for better RAM management, it is still possible for your system to run out of RAM. If Telegram is performing slowly on your mobile device, you might want to close unused applications on your device.

This should free up RAM and CPU cores on your device, which should improve Telegram’s overall performance.

6. Update Telegram.

The current version of Telegram you’re using might have an underlying issue or is not properly optimized. To rule this out, try updating the app on your device to patch possible bugs and glitches.

Go to the App Store or Google Play Store on your device and install the latest version of Telegram.

You can also take this time to update other apps on your device as well.

7. Reinstall Telegram.

If none of the solutions above worked, we recommend reinstalling Telegram. This way, you can ensure that you have the latest working version of the app and there are no corrupted data in your storage.

Here’s how you can delete Telegram:

  1. First, go to your app drawer and locate Telegram
  2. After that, hold down its app icon until the selection menu shows up.
  3. Lastly, tap on Uninstall (Android) or Remove App (iOS) to delete Telegram
