How to Fix Text Notification Issues on iOS 14

Tired of the text notification issues on iOS 14?

If you’re an Apple user for a while, you may have noticed that every iOS upgrade brings with it bugs and glitches. One such example is the text notification issue on iOS 14. What makes it worse is that even after multiple user reports, the company doesn’t immediately release an update to resolve the issue, forcing you to work around it until then.

Recently, users have encountered several bugs, such as silent text alerts or notifications not showing up on the lock screen. Others have also complained about the red notification badge missing on the iMessage app. Furthermore, the issue is not only restricted to iPhones as AirPods Show No Notification Sounds On iOS 14 also.

This becomes highly inconvenient as you may miss some important notifications although the messages are delivered, putting you on thin ice. But don’t worry. This article will cover multiple tips on troubleshooting the issue.

So without any delay, let’s get started!

1. Ensure Ring Switch Is Enabled.

If your phone is receiving all messages and the only problem is with the notification sound, make sure that the ring or silent switch is enabled. To do so, take a look at the left side of your phone.

If the switch is at orange, your iPhone is on silent mode. You need to bring it towards the front to enable audible notification alerts again. If you continue to face text notification issues, move on to more methods below.

2. Restart Your Phone.

Inaudible text alerts or notifications not showing on your lock screen can result from unknown software glitches. Other such glitches include the iOS 14 Timer Not Showing Up On Lock Screen. Most of the time, they can be eliminated by simply restarting your device.

To restart your iPhone, follow the steps below:

  1. To start, press and hold the power button on the right side of your iPhone. Suppose your Face ID is enabled, press and hold the volume down button and side button together instead.
  2. Release the button once the “slide to power off” option appears on your screen.

3. Turn Off Do Not Disturb Mode.

The most common reason you may face text notification issues on all versions of iOS 14 is that the Do Not Disturb mode is enabled. This is indicated by a moon icon appearing on the status bar.

The Do Not Disturb feature silences all your calls, notifications, and text messages. This is probably why you may not be receiving any alerts. You can simply turn it back on to resolve the matter.

There are two different methods to do so. The first one is quick and requires you to follow these steps:

  1. Start by swiping down from the top right corner of your screen to access the Control Center.
  2. Then, tap on the crescent moon icon if it’s gray to disable the feature.
  3. Close the Control Center by either tapping on the screen or swiping up from the bottom.

4. Turn Off Do Not Disturb While Driving.

Another very recent feature Apple has added to its iOS devices is the Do Not Disturb While Driving. As you can guess by the name, it silences all notification types and prevents them from showing up on your lock screen whenever the device detects that you are on a ride.

To deactivate this mode, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to the Settings and tap on Do Not Disturb.
  2. Scroll down to Do Not Disturb While Driving and set it to Manually so that the feature doesn’t turn on automatically while you’re driving. You can then enable/disable it through the Control Center.

Sometimes, the only problem you’ll face is that the Do Not Disturb While Driving mode stays on even after you’ve gotten out of the car seat. This glitch occurs due to unknown reasons, but you can quickly turn it off by:

  1. You can either press the Home button or swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  2. Next, you’ll see a prompt appear on the screen. Just tap on the I’m Not Driving option, and you’re good to go.

5. Disable Filter Unknown Senders.

iPhone has a feature available for your convenience that silences all calls and notifications from unknown senders. This may pose a problem to you by muting a few important calls. In such a situation, you can either save them as your contact or disable the feature entirely.

If you’re going for the latter, follow these simple steps:

  1. First, go to Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Then, tap on Messages.

6. Ensure The Always Show Preview Is Turned On.

For those who are not receiving any notifications on their lock screen, it may be due to the Always Show Previews feature being disabled. If so, you need to turn it back on through Settings for the text alerts to work properly.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. To start, open the Settings app.
  2. Now, go to Notifications.
  3. Then, tap on Show Preview.

7. Disable Hide Alerts.

If you’re only unable to receive text notifications from specific contacts, there’s a possibility you may have turned on the Hide Alerts feature for their messages. To disable it, here’s what you need to do:

  1. First, go to the conversation of the contact you’re not receiving notifications for.
  2. Now, tap on their name, number, or picture at the very top.
  3. Then, tap on the information icon, and if not already, turn off the toggle next to Hide Alerts.

8. Exit Conversations.

Generally, when you stay on a conversation thread and just go back to the home screen or any other app, your iPhone may consider any new messages as read hence why you don’t receive any notifications.

To avoid this situation, all you need to do is exit the conversation before closing the Messages app. Although this specific method is not a permanent fix, it has solved the issue of text notifications not appearing on screen for many users.

9. Reset iMessage.

Similar to how resetting your device removes several bugs, resetting iMessage may do the same to get the notifications to work properly again. The advantage to it is that you don’t lose all the data stored on your device.

All you need to do is follow the instructions below:

  1. Start by launching the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Messages.
  3. Then, turn off the toggle for iMessage.

  1. Now, restart your device and re-enable the iMessage from the exact location you turned it off.

10. Pair Your iPhone With Apple Watch.

This method is for those who cannot get their text notification issues on iOS 14 fixed but are fortunate enough to own an Apple Watch. The WatchOS manages to display all your notifications even when the iPhone is unable to. All you need to do is pair both the devices, and you’ll be back to receiving alerts.
