‘The Connection has Timed Out’ on Twitter? Here’s The Fix!

Seeing an error message saying ‘The Connection has Timed Out’ on Twitter?

Connection timeout errors on most apps and websites are usually related to problems with their servers. This error occurs when a server is slow to reply to the data request of your device.

This error can appear randomly on Twitter while using the platform and doesn’t point out a specific problem. However, it is possible that Twitter’s servers are offline or currently experiencing problems.

Thankfully, Twitter has a dedicated page that shows the current status of its servers and services. If their servers are down, you cannot do anything about it but wait.

On the other hand, if their servers are working correctly, the problem could be on your device.

To help you address this issue, we’ve decided to make a simple guide on fixing the error message saying ‘The Connection has Timed Out’ on Twitter.

Let’s get started!

1. Turn Off VPN Services.

If you use VPNs on your device, try to turn it off when using Twitter. Although VPNs are great for security reasons, it can also cause problems with your network.

Since it works by altering your default IP address randomly, your device may find it difficult to maintain a stable connection with Twitter’s servers. Besides, VPNs also redirect your data to one of their servers before sending it to Twitter, which can add further delays and lags on your network.

Disable your VPN and see if your problem with Twitter goes away.

2. Check for App Updates.

Applications need frequent updates to stay optimized on most devices. However, if you are not fond of updating your apps regularly, now is the best time. Possibly, the version of Twitter on your device is no longer supported by its servers, which causes the connection timeout error.

On Android, you can check for updates by doing the following:

  1. First, launch Google Play Store on your device and open the side menu.
  2. After that, tap on My Apps & Games to check for available updates.
  3. Finally, hit the Update button beside Twitter to install its latest version on your device.

If you are using an iOS device, see the steps below to update Twitter.

  1. On your device, launch the App Store from the home screen and tap on the Updates tab.
  2. After that, the App Store will automatically check for available updates on all the applications installed on your device.
  3. If available, tap the Update button next to Twitter to install the update.

After updating Twitter, try using it normally to see if the connection timeout error would still occur.

3. Clear Your Media and Web Storage (iOS Only).

Like a web cache, media, and web storage on iOS devices contain cached data from your Twitter account. These data are used to boost the performance of the app and improve your overall user experience.

However, your cached data can get corrupted anytime and cause all sorts of problems on Twitter.

If you see an error message saying ‘The Connection has Timed Out’ on Twitter, try to clear your media and web storage.

  1. On your device, open Twitter and swipe right anywhere on your screen to view the side drawer.
  2. Now, tap on Settings and Privacy.
  3. Under the General tab, find and tap on Data Usage
  4. After that, tap on either Media Storage or Web Storage.
  5. Lastly, tap on Clear Media or Web Storage. Repeat this process until both Media and Web Storage are deleted.

Go back to your account and use it for a few minutes to see if the error message would still occur.

4. Clear Your Browsing Cache and Cookies.

Browsing cache and cookies are temporary files stored on your device locally composed of scripts, photos, and other media forms. While using your browser, this data accumulates and gets harder to load.

If you see unusual behaviors from websites that you visit like Twitter, try to clear your browsing data to free up system resources.

  1. First, open your browser and go to its History tab.
  2. After that, click the Clear Browsing Data button from the side menu.
  3. Now, click the checkbox beside ‘Cached Images and Files’ and ‘Cookies and Other Site Data’.
  4. Finally, change the Time Range to All Time and start the clearing process by hitting the Clear Data button.

After clearing your browser’s data, go back to Twitter and re-access your account. Use it for a couple of minutes to check if the error message saying ‘The Connection has Timed Out’ on Twitter would still occur.

5. Reinstall the Twitter App.

If you experience random errors on Twitter, it may indicate that some of its installation files got corrupted. Usually, corrupted files are hard to diagnose, so we recommend that you just simply reinstall the app on your device.

On Android, you can reinstall Twitter by doing the following:

  1. First, open your device and find Twitter from the app drawer.
  2. After that, tap and hold its app icon until the selection screen shows up.
  3. Finally, tap on Uninstall to delete the app from your device.

6. Check and Reset Your Internet.

Connection timeouts could also occur if your network is running slow. This can make it hard for your device to communicate with Twitter’s servers, which causes the error message.

To verify if your network is the problem, run a speed test using Fast.com to measure its upload and download speed.

Try to restart your router if the result shows that your network is the problem. Find the power cable of your router and unplug it from the wall outlet for at least 10 seconds. After that, plug back in the power cable to restart your router.
