How to Fix Update 20H2 won’t Install on Windows 10?

Update 20H2 won’t install on your Windows 10?

Microsoft launched the 20H2 update in October 2020, which is known to be one of the most critical Windows version upgrades.

This update is mainly focused on enhancing the performance levels and improving the security of the operating system. It also features some other noticeable changes such as a redesigned Start Menu, improved taskbar, and adjustment of the refresh rate, which is very exciting.

Recently, several users reported that they could not install the 20H2 update on their Windows. Most of the time, the update gets stuck, or the system reboots without finishing the installation. Upon research, we found out that this can be due to various reasons, including corrupt Windows Update components.

If you are facing a similar issue, we have listed some troubleshooting steps below that proved to be effective for several users.

Let’s get right into it!

1. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter.

If you ever run into Windows update errors, one of the easiest yet effective ways to resolve the issue is running the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

The Windows Update troubleshooter will terminate the Windows Update services, delete all the unwanted cached files, and restart the Windows Update services, thus solving the error in the process.

Here is all that you need to do:

  1. Go to Settings and select Update & Security.
  2. Select Troubleshoot from the left panel.
  3. Locate Windows Update and click on it.
Run WIndows Update Troubleshooter
  1. Finally, click on Run the troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. If the troubleshooter finds any issues, it will notify you and attempt to fix them automatically.

Hopefully, running the troubleshooter will resolve the 20H2 update error on your Windows.

2. Reset Windows Update Components.

Another possible reason behind the 20H2 installation error can be the corrupt Windows Update components.

If the Windows Update components are corrupt, they will not allow you to install the latest updates on your device. The best solution you can try in this case is resetting the Windows Update components

Doing so will revert the components to their initial, error-free state. Resetting the components can solve a plethora of Windows installation and update issues in no time.

3. Run SFC and DISM scans.

Just like the Windows Update troubleshooter, Windows comes with several other built-in utilities that help users fix bugs and other corruption errors in no time.

Two such utilities are the System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tools. These administrative-level tools scan the system for errors, identify the bugs, and then eliminate them.

However, the working process of both tools is a bit different. We suggest running an SFC scan at first. If the Update 20H2 won’t install on Windows 10 even after that, you can move forward with the DISM scan.

Here is how you can run a DISM scan if the System File Checker fails to fix the issue:

  1. Type cmd in the search bar and click on Run as administrator
  2. Now type the command mentioned below in the elevated Command Prompt and hit Enter
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restore Health Command
  1. Once done, restart your PC and check if the error is resolved.

You should now be able to install the 20H2 update without any issues.

4. Use the Media Creation Tool.

You can also try using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool to resolve the 20H2 installation error on your PC. This method has worked for several users, and if you haven’t been able to resolve the issue under consideration yet, we suggest trying this method.

Media Creation Tool plays a crucial role in building the Windows installation media. It is also used to repair corrupt installations on your PC.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Download the Media Creation Tool and if a download prompt pops up on your window, click on Save File
  2. Once the installation is complete, open it and right-click on the MediaCreationTool20H2 file.
  3. Select Run as administrator and click on Yes in the confirmation prompt.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions, and in the ‘What do you want to do’ window, select Upgrade this PC now

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions again to proceed.
  2. Inside the ‘Ready to install’ page, click on Change what to keep. Doing so will allow you to select the files you do not want to lose during this process’s execution. We recommend choosing ‘Keep personal files and apps’ if you do not want to lose any data.
  3. Finally, click on Install and wait for the process to complete and then check if the issue is resolved.

Using the Media Creation Tool will hopefully install the 20H2 update automatically on your PC. However, if the error persists, proceed to the next method below.

5. Try Using CleanMyPC.

As we mentioned earlier, corruption errors and bugs can prevent Windows from installing any new updates on your PC. If running the utilities we discussed above did not help you resolve the issue, you can try using a reliable PC cleaner.

PC cleaners scan through your system and its programs, such as the Windows Registry, identify the problematic files, and then attempt to fix them with little to no user input. However, you must make sure that the PC cleaner you are using can perform such advanced functions.

If you are struggling to find an efficient cleaner, we recommend using CleanMyPC

6. Manually Upgrade Windows.

If none of the methods mentioned above works for you and Update 20H2 won’t Install on Windows 10 even after trying the troubleshooting steps, we encourage you to upgrade Windows manually.

Windows comes with an Update Assistant, which is a native update management tool. It is specifically designed to help users install the latest updates, so they don’t miss out on the new features and other perks. Moreover, the Update Assistant is a reliable rescuer that you can count on in case of update errors.

Here is how you can manually upgrade Windows on your PC:

  1. Install the Update Assistant and run it to proceed.
  2. Wait for the assistant to check the overall condition of your system. Once it has scanned through the system, it will begin installing the 20H2 update.
  3. When the update is installed successfully, restart your PC.

That’s it. Hopefully, Update Assistant will install the update without any issues in no time.
