How to Customize the Touch Keyboard on Windows 11

Wondering how to customize the touch keyboard on Windows 11?

Windows 11 includes a built-in touchscreen keyboard that can be added to the taskbar if necessary, but it is disabled by default.

The touch keyboard offers a wide range of customization options, allowing you to resize the entire keyboard, adjust the key size, and select keyboard themes. Additionally, there are four different layout options available on the keyboard itself.

If you are a fan of the touch keyboards, you are in the right place because in this guide, we will walk you through different methods of customizing the touch keyboard on Windows 11. All the methods are easy to execute, and should not take much of your time.

Let’s get started!

1. Modify Windows Settings.

The easiest way to make the desired changes is via Windows Settings.

The Settings section of Windows includes a dedicated section for customizing the keyboard, but this method can be used by standard users as well. If you have multiple users on your PC and want to make administrative-level changes, then the best way to do it is via Windows Registry.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Press Windows + I keys simultaneously on your keyboard to open Windows Settings.
  2. Inside the Settings window, choose Personalization from the left panel.
  3. Now click on Touch Keyboard from the list of options available on your screen.
  4. In the next window, you can now adjust the keyboard size according to your preferences using the slider as shown below.
  5. Next, expand the Keyboard theme and choose any theme you like. If you want to create a customized theme, click on Custom theme at the bottom of the window.
  1. Click on Edit and make the desired changes.
  2. In the same window, look for the Key background option. You can turn the toggle on if you want the keys to have a background.
  3. Under Key background, expand the dropdown menu against Key text size and select the desired option.

This should make the desired changes.

2. How to Fix Touch Keyboard Not Appearing on Windows 11

If for some reason the Touch Keyboard doesn’t come up on screen even when you open it conventionally, chances are it’s because the main service that’s supporting this functionality is disabled.

Here is how to fix this:

  1. Press Windows + R keys simultaneously on your keyboard to open a Run dialogue box.
  2. Inside the text field of the dialogue box, type ‘services.msc’ and hit Enter. This will launch Windows Services on your computer.
  3. Once you are inside the Services window, locate and right-click on the Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service.
  1. Select Properties from the context menu and then navigate to the General tab.
  2. Expand the dropdown menu against Startup type and select Manual.
  3. Finally, click on Apply to save the changes.

You should now be able to use the touch keyboard without any issues.
