Most of the time, this problem is caused by server-related issues and errors. However, it can also be due to corrupted browsing caches, improper configurations, outdated software, or third-party software.

1. Check ChatGPT Status. 

Before doing anything, we suggest checking ChatGPT’s status if you encounter issues with the platform. As mentioned, ChatGPT is still on BETA testing, and the platform can run into occasional errors. 

Fortunately, OpenAI provided a status page where users can check if ChatGPT is available or offline.

If the servers are down, the only thing you can do is wait since server-related issues can’t be resolved on your end. On the other hand, you can head to the next solution if there’s nothing wrong with the servers. 

2. Restart Your Browser. 

You can try relaunching your web browser if ChatGPT is not working correctly on your end. A temporary bug or error may have occurred on your browser, causing some websites to run into errors. 

Close all the tabs on your browser and relaunch your web browser. Try using ChatGPT again to check if the problem is solved. 

You can also try using other browsers to use ChatGPT and see if the same issue occurs.

3. Restart Your Computer. 

If restarting your web browser was not enough, you can try rebooting your computer. This should reload your resources and ensure that there are no temporary issues with your operating system. 

Follow the steps below to restart your PC: 

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start Menu
  2. After that, click on the Power Options tab. 
  3. Finally, choose Restart and wait for your system to reboot.

4. Clear Browsing Data. 

Corrupted browsing data is the most common culprit why ChatGPT is not working. Your browser stores data about the sites you visit, and they can accumulate over time. When this happens, these data can get corrupted, causing issues with your browser and the sites you visit. 

See the steps below to clear your browsing data: 

  1. First, open your browser and access Settings
  2. After that, scroll down to Privacy and Security. Click on Clear Browsing Data
  3. On the next page, change the Time Range to All Time and check all the boxes. 
  4. Hit Clear Data afterward and wait for the process to complete.

Re-login to your ChatGPT account and see if the service is working.

5. Check Your Network Connection. 

Unstable networks could also be the reason ChatGPT is not working. Since you are using an online service, you’ll need a reliable connection to enjoy ChatGPT’s services without encountering issues. 

To confirm if your network is the problem, perform a test using to measure its current upload and download bandwidth.

If the result indicates a problem with your connection, restart your modem or router to re-establish the link with your ISP’s servers. Unplug your router from the power source and wait for 5 to 10 seconds before plugging it back in.

6. Turn Off VPN. 

Virtual private networks are third-party services that protect your network and data from hackers, websites, and other harmful entities online. They work by filtering your activity through their servers and masking your IP address. 

However, this process can cause stability issues to your network, causing ChatGPT not to work.

To avoid problems, we recommend turning off your VPN before using the chatbot.

Follow the steps below to turn off your extensions: 

  1. Launch your browser and access Settings
  2. Now, click on the Extensions tab in the side menu. 
  3. Finally, disable all your extensions and restart your browser.

9. Contact Support. 

If none of the solutions above worked, the last thing you can do is report the issue to OpenAI’s team.
