How to Fix Notifications Not Working on Telegram Desktop

Can’t figure out why notifications are not working on the Telegram desktop app?

Telegram is a free cloud-based messaging service that has support for multiple platforms. It was released in 2013 and has gained over 200 million users in the span of seven years. One of the best things about Telegram is that it has a dedicated desktop app, which works great for office and business settings.

However, Telegram’s popularity is mainly due to its end-to-end video call, VoIP, and encrypted file-sharing technology, which is arguably the best in the market in terms of security.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t save Telegram from downtimes and errors.

Like other platforms, Telegram may suffer from server outages, system-wide glitches, and other issues.

If you are here, we can assume that notifications are not working on the Telegram desktop app. Based on what we know, this problem mainly occurs due to outages and improper system configurations.

On the other hand, it can also be due to slow network connections or corrupted account data.

In this guide, we’ll show you what to do if notifications are not working correctly on the Telegram desktop app.

Let’s begin!

1. Check for Outages.

Before tweaking your system and account configurations, we suggest checking Telegram’s servers first if a feature is not working correctly. This way, you’ll know if the problem is coming from your end or Telegram’s servers.

Since Telegram doesn’t have a dedicated page, you can use third-party sites like Downdetector to view the platform’s status.

If there are ongoing issues on the servers, the best thing to do is wait since server-related problems can’t be resolved on your end. On the other hand, you can head to the next solution below if Telegram’s servers are up and running.

2. Restart Your Computer.

If notifications are not working on the Telegram desktop app, you can try restarting your system. This should reload your computer’s resources and eliminate temporary bugs and glitches that may have occurred during runtime.

For Windows users, here’s how you can restart your PC:

  1. On your keyboard, hit the Windows key to open the Start Menu
  2. Next, access the Power Options tab.
  3. Finally, click on Restart to reboot your computer.
Restart Windows

If you’re using a Mac, follow the steps below to restart it:

  1. First, access the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your display.
  2. After that, choose the Restart option from the drop-down screen.
  3. Lastly, click Restart in the dialog box to confirm.
Restart macOS

After restarting your computer, go back to Telegram and see if notifications are working.

3. Re-Login to Telegram.

A random bug or glitch may have occurred on Telegram that caused your account data to corrupt. If this happens, the app may not be able to fetch new data from the servers, explaining why you’re not getting notifications for new messages.

To fix this issue, follow the guide below to log out of your Telegram account:

  1. Launch Telegram on your Mac or Windows computer.
  2. Next, go to the Settings and click on your Profile
  3. Finally, click Log Out in the right-side menu of your screen.

Once done, wait for 2 to 3 minutes before logging back into your Telegram account.

4. Check Your Network Connection.

If refreshing your user data did not work, the problem might be with your network connection. While Telegram does not demand a high-speed internet connection, it still needs a stable network to function properly.

To confirm if your network is the culprit, perform a test using Fast.com to measure your network’s current speed and latency.

Speed Test

If the test indicates an issue with your network, power cycle your modem or router to re-establish the link with your ISP’s servers. Unplug your device from the wall outlet and wait for 5 to 10 seconds before plugging it back in.

Restart Router

Once done, re-run the test to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your provider and ask them to fix the issue.

5. Check Telegram’s Settings.

One of the most common reasons why notifications are not working on Telegram is if the feature is not enabled. You might have played around with Telegram’s settings and mistakenly disabled the notifications.

To be sure, follow the steps below to check your configurations:

  1. First, open Telegram on your computer.
  2. Now, go to the Settings and click on Notifications and Sounds
  3. Lastly, look for the Notifications section and ensure that your configurations are set accordingly.

Head back to the main page afterward and see if you’ll receive notifications for new messages.

6. Turn Off VPN.

If you happen to have a VPN on your computer, it might be causing the issue on Telegram. While VPNs are great for security reasons, they also cause interruptions and delays to your network.

To avoid this, we recommend turning off your VPN before accessing Telegram.

PureVPN

On the other hand, you can also try switching to a better provider if your current VPN keeps giving you problems. We recommend checking out PureVPN as an alternative. Unlike other services, it uses high-speed servers to ensure fast and secure connections.

PureVPN also works with most streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+.

7. Reset Notifications.

The Telegram app on your device may have run into an issue, causing some features like notifications to malfunction. To address this, we suggest resetting your notifications in the settings.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. On the Telegram app, click on Settings to access it.
  2. After that, go to Notifications and Sound
  3. Finally, click on Reset Notifications under the Notifications tab.

Once done, ask one of your friends to send you a message to check if you’ll receive a notification about it.

8. Reinstall Telegram.

At this point, we suggest reinstalling Telegram if notifications are still not working on your computer. There might be a problem with some of the packages, and the app needs to be reinstalled.

On Windows, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Access the Start Menu by pressing the Windows key
  2. Next, look for the ‘Control Panel’ and click on Open
  3. Click on the Uninstall a Program option and look for Telegram on the list.
  4. Finally, right-click on the app and choose Uninstall
