How to Fix Telegram Not Opening on Mobile

Wondering why Telegram is not opening on your mobile device?

Online communication is crucial, especially with our current COVID-19 situation. Due to this, the demand for messaging platforms such as Telegram is higher than ever.

Telegram is an online messaging service made for multiple platforms. It is currently one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, with over 200 million registered users. Despite being on top of the market, this doesn’t exempt Telegram from downtimes and errors.

Telegram’s mobile app is the most used platform, and it also has the most issues.

Depending on the situation, Telegram users may encounter connectivity issues, random errors, or launch problems.

If you are reading this, we can assume that Telegram is not opening on your mobile device.

Based on what we know, this problem occurs due to corrupted app data or outdated software. On the other hand, server-related issues or network outages could also trigger this problem on Telegram.

To help out, we’ve decided to make a guide for fixing Telegram if it’s not opening on your mobile device.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Check Telegram Servers.

If you can’t use Telegram on your mobile device, it might indicate a problem with the servers. Since Telegram is an online service, you should always check its servers when you encounter problems on the platform.

You can use third-party sites like Downdetector to view the current status of Telegram.

If there are ongoing problems on the servers, the best thing you can do is wait. Sadly, server-related issues can’t be resolved on your end.

On the other hand, you can head to the next solution if there’s nothing wrong with the servers.

2. Restart Your Device.

A temporary bug or glitch may have occurred on your mobile device, preventing Telegram from launching. To rule this out, we suggest restarting your device to clear its temporary cache and eliminate errors.

For Android users, follow the guide below to restart your device:

  1. Locate the Power button on your Android device.
  2. After that, hold it down until the options menu shows up.
  3. Finally, tap on Restart to reboot your system.
Restart Android

If you’re using an iOS device, here’s how you can restart your system:

  1. Access the Assistive Touch on your display.
  2. Next, go to the Device tab.
  3. Lastly, tap on More and choose the Restart option.
Restart iOS

Once done, go back to Telegram to check if it works.

3. Check Your Network Connection.

A stable internet connection is required when using online messaging services such as Telegram. If you can’t access Telegram on your mobile device, it might indicate a problem with your network.

To confirm this, run a test using Fast.com to measure your network’s upload and download bandwidth.

Speed Test

If the result indicates a problem with your internet, we recommend restarting your router or modem to refresh the connection with your ISP’s servers. Unplug your router from the outlet and wait for 5 to 10 seconds before reconnecting it.

Restart Router

Once done, perform another test to check if the problem is solved. If not, contact your provider and ask them to fix the issue.

4. Turn Off VPN.

Virtual private networks are third-party services that protect your network from hackers and websites that track your activity. They filter your data through their servers and mask your default IP address to hide your location.

While this process works excellent for security reasons, it could also cause interruptions and delays to your network.

To avoid issues, turn off your VPN first before accessing Telegram.

PureVPN

On the other hand, you can try switching to a different network such as PureVPN if you keep experiencing issues with your current VPN. Compared to other providers, it uses high-speed servers to ensure fast and secure connections.

PureVPN also works well with most streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+.

5. Clear Telegram Cache (Android).

For Android users, we suggest clearing your cache if you can’t access Telegram. The app’s cached data may have accumulated and become corrupted.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. First, open the app drawer on your device.
  2. After that, press and hold Telegram’s icon until the selection menu shows up.
  3. Now, tap on App Info and open the Storage & Cache tab.
  4. Lastly, tap the Clear Cache button.

6. Update Telegram.

The current version of Telegram you’re using might have an underlying issue. If this is the case, we suggest updating the app to patch possible bugs and glitches on your device. Telegram might already be aware of the problem and could release a patch anytime.

Head to the Google Play Store or App Store to update Telegram on your device. While you’re there, take the opportunity to update your other applications as well.

7. Reinstall Telegram.

If Telegram is still not opening on your mobile device, we recommend reinstalling the app. This should ensure that there are no problems with the application and you have the latest working version of Telegram.

Check out the steps below to delete Telegram on your device:

  1. First, open your home screen and locate Telegram
  2. Now, hold down its app icon until the selection menu shows up.
  3. Lastly, tap on Remove App (iOS) or Uninstall (Android) to delete the app.
