How to Fix Update Issues on Discord

Do you experience update issues on Discord?

Discord is one of the best communication platforms available for multiple platforms. The app offers excellent features like server management, built-in noise cancellation, screen sharing, and more.

However, Discord did not come with these features at launch. The app started with essential features, and developers slowly improved the platform through updates.

Just like any other app, updates are just as crucial for Discord.

Unfortunately, many Windows users have been experiencing update issues on Discord. Over time, this can be a problem as the app won’t have access to optimizations and patches.

Based on what we know, update issues on Discord are caused by faulty servers or slow internet connections. On the other hand, it can also be due to corrupted files, third-party applications, or Windows Firewall.

To help you out, we’ve decided to make a guide for fixing update issues on Discord.

Let’s get started!

1. Check Discord Servers.

When updating Discord, it needs to connect with the servers to download the necessary files. However, Discord’s team could be performing maintenance on the servers, or an unexpected error occurred.

To confirm this, visit Discord’s status page and see if there are reported problems with the platform.

Unfortunately, the only thing you can do if Discord’s servers are down is to wait. On the other hand, you can proceed to the following solutions below if there’s nothing wrong with the platform.

2. Restart Your System.

Before changing your configurations, we suggest restarting your system if you experience update issues on Discord. This should clear temporary files from the update and refresh your system’s resources.

Here’s how you can reboot your Windows PC:

  1. First, open the Start Menu by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard.
  2. After that, access the Power Options tab.
  3. Lastly, choose Restart to reboot your system.

Restart Discord afterward to check if the app would update.

3. Run Discord As Admin.

When updating an application, some of its files need to be changed. If the update keeps failing, your system could be preventing the app from changing some resources from your storage. To fix this, run Discord as an administrator to bypass restrictions set by Windows.

See the steps below to guide you on the process:

  1. On your desktop, right-click on the Discord app.
  2. Next, choose Properties and open the Compatibility tab.
  3. Finally, enable the ‘Run this Program as an Administrator’ option and click OK to save the changes.

Go back to Discord to check if the problem is solved.

4. Disable Your Antivirus.

Antivirus programs are tools that protect your system from malware and other viruses. However, some can get too protective and restrict legitimate programs like Discord. If you can’t update the app on your system, try disabling your antivirus first.

On the other hand, you can also add Discord to your safe list or whitelist if your antivirus supports that feature.

5. Add Discord to Your Firewall.

Windows Defender Firewall is a security feature built-in to Windows. This controls the access of applications to your system and prevents malicious programs from getting installed. If you experience update issues on Discord, check if the app is allowed through your firewall.

Follow the guide below to allow Discord through your firewall:

  1. First, press the Windows + S keys on your keyboard and look for ‘Windows Defender Firewall’.
  2. Next, open Windows Firewall and click on ‘Allow an App or Feature Through Windows Defender Firewall’.
  3. Lastly, look for Discord and ensure that it’s allowed to access your Public and Private network.
